Stay well away from the shoreline today. And please understand that tsunami waves cannot be ridden! A powerful earthquake offshore near Japan sent a tsunami across the Pacific Ocean and first hit Hawai`i around 3:00 am last night. The warnings have been downgraded to advisories, but there may be surges throughout the day. Any surf that is happening around the islands is not worth risking our lives over. Maui has had the largest reported waves, most significantly a near 6 foot surge pushing up to 1/3 of a mile inland in the Kahului area.
